i LOVED this movie. i think i almost liked it better than the book, which is a first for me for a book-to-film adaptation. apparently production started for hail mary before the book was even published, though, which i find really interesting. i loved the book--i read it a few years ago, and it really really worked for me. andy weir has this style of writing that (for me, at least) makes it so easy to be engulfed in the story because it feels like you're problem-solving right along with the main character. the movie was like that too, but i felt like the movie had an emotional depth to it that i never got from the book, which i found really satisfying. also, oh my god, the cinematography? the lighting? the practical effects? gorgeous, moving, wonderful, phenomenal. absolute cinema. the puppet work with rocky was phenomenal as well, he felt so completely real. and the acting was amazing; i LOVED sandra hüller as stratt, and though i never would've pictured ryan gosling as grace when i first read the book, his performance really captured the essence of the character, for me. my only critique--or, it's less of a critique, really, and moreso just something i found funny--but gosling is horrible at wearing glasses. half the time they weren't even on his face properly and he had them like, hanging off one ear or something, which as a glasses-wearer is honestly kind of impressive? i tried it, and i can't even do that with mine, lmao. anyways, five out of five stars definitely, this movie has been on my mind ever since i saw it and i don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon.

really good for a sequel, but the plot is honestly a little crazy, lol.

it's still wild to me that Ralph Macchio was 22 in this. a classic, really good movie, no notes.

it's a bit gruesome, but i thought the acting and cinematography was really good.

not awful, but not nearly as good as the first 2 movies. it's not really as funny, the romantic-misunderstanding subplot drags, and none of the villains hit as hard as those of the previous movies. overall, i'd say it's ok, but just a bit unsatisfying.
rating: ★★★☆☆
a rare case where the sequel is better than the original movie. the plot really grabs you the whole way through, and Alfred Molina is SO so good as Doc Ock.

really funny, lots of dry british humor. one of my favorite movies.

i liked this movie, but i didn't love it. i don't know. it was pretty good, but it didn't really hit for me for some reason.
